How we are strange

How we are strange:

  • you lose more than win
  • it’s easy to get injured
  • it’s a short career
  • you are old in sport when others are still young
  • you must follow a lifestyle hard enough
  • many athletes live a nomad life
  • you have always give the best and often it’snot enough
  • if you do not win it spreads the idea that you’re finished

nevertheless the passion that governs us makes us continue against any kind of logic.

Napoli unsuccessful emotional condition

Yesterday I wondered who between Juventus and Napoli would have shown the will to win from the start of the game and Juve did it from the first moment. It would be useful to understand why this state of mind it has been demonstrated by Napoli only during the second time it has provided, as we say, “a proof of pride.” In my opinion an experienced coach like Benitez should have parameters to determine if before an important game his team is in the best emotional state to face an opponent that you know the game system and as well you know the fighting spirit that, his coach, Conte is able to convey to his players. With this awareness, you go in knowing what  it’s very likely to happen the field and that really did take place. Of course the players are not robots that perform the Benitez’s order, however, a team that wants to win cannot enter the pitch with that attitude. So I think it is important for Napoli to understand how the attitude of the players has been so dismissive, you may be inferior in terms of quality of play, but not in relation to the will to face to the best of your abilities the opponents. The only one who has shown a positive approach was Reina, the Napoli goalkeeper, who has played his role with determination. Napoli needs to improve its ability to go in the field with the emotional condition allowing to play a game with determination, otherwise the class of individual players and the team will remain locked in a drawer where you’ve lost the key.

Tennis is an emotional meat grinder

Nadal says that tennis is a difficult and lonely sport in which the mental aspect is dominant over everything else. It’s a description of this game, profession, explaining in a few words how hard it’s to be successful in court, and contains in itself the reason why so many young players leave but very few become high-level players, and became part of the top 100 in the world. Tennis is a sport that challenge the self-confidence, because at the end of each game one loses and one wins and this is repeated many many times, spaced a few seconds apart. Submit themselves to this subtle torture it’s what the players love and hate, but when you are in this meat grinder of ups and downs, which stimulate contrasting feelings only few resist the temptation to give up and maintain high confidence in themselves .

It’s a new football season: win who will manage the emotion

It starts a new football season, this year even more important because it will end with the World Cup in Brazil. There is therefore a further reason for the players to want to play your best, with the aim to be among the 22-man squad for the World Cup in South America. In any event, each team will have its goal to be achieved: for some will not go back, for others to get into the UEFA  or confirm the result of the previous season, for others it will be to win the championship or play the Champions League. Beyond the technical and tactical level possessed, each team will show its value only if the players on the field, the bench, the coach and the president will demonstrate a high level of emotional control. The management of the competitive stress affects everyone, without exception. In Italy we were often champions of stress. We have the record of coaches fired during the championship by presidents who can not contain their fears or their wounded narcissism also by a few negative results. We are also a League where the players make too many fouls and it is not true that the players would not be able to avoid them, because when they play at the European level they did less. In Italy they feel free to not respect the rules, protected by fans, coaches and presidents always ready to blame the referees,  to talk about a conspiracy against their team or to not have understood that football permit the physical contrasts. The coaches knowing that half of them during the championship will be probably fired risk to live in a dramatic way the negative results of their team, for many it is a temporary job, certainly very well paid, but risky as climbing an eight thousand knowing the number of victims it kills every year. Despite these uncertainties, however, it’s absolutely necessary that the protagonists of football know to keep a cool head, reminding themselves the team’s objectives and how to achieve them. Self-control, effective stress management, aggression loyal and respectful of the opponents must be the basis of the behavior on the field, in other words it means knowing how to manage the emotions in a context, the match, which itself is a highly emotional situation. Therefore the teams have to live for 90 minutes this mental condition showing able to manage it effectively. This is in my opinion the challenge that each team must prepare to face and win each match, as well as the final result.

Top athletes need the coach-leader

Crucial skill for the coaches of elite athletes is not only to have a technical background updated continuously, but especially the ability to manage the best athletes. They are coach – leader  acting as a leader to conduct them to achieve their best performances.  They are not coach – teacher as they should be with those less experienced.  These coaches talk and make themselves in the shoes of the other to establish emotional closeness. This is necessary because the top athletes have built through their careers a specific profile summarized as follows:

  1. have achieved some of the goals they had set, and therefore are considered successful people
  2. are characterized by the energy and commitment
  3. their skills emerge in a decisive manner in situations of increased competitive pressure
  4. are convinced to be able to deal with most of the situations or problems
  5. assume responsibility for the results of their performances
  6. are perceived by others as reliable and competent
  7. are often considered by most people as young as a model to emulate
  8. derive maximum satisfaction from the continuous renewal of the challenges facing
  9. are driven to find solutions
  10. seek the contribution of people who can help them in achieving their goals

Of course we must not fall into the trap of believing that a good level of effectiveness in these areas will be achieved with ease or that these individuals do not live moments of difficulty. On the contrary, these skills and standards are achieved and maintained through a continuous work, an effort to improve even when it seems far away, pursued even in those days that are frustrating.

We need a new definition of success

We need a definition of success more humane and sustainable. Since too many years we are living  in a society where every day we see the disastrous effects of the idea that the only thing that matters is winning. The big financial frauds and diffusion of doping in sports are here to show the pervasiveness of this mentality.
Only in these days we have the confession of a former cyclist Jan Ulrich, to be doped, the explosion of new details on the case of Schwazer and the mass protests in Brazil against the policy of the government that employs too many resources for the football World Cup  and the Olympics.

They are huge issues that dominate the nations themselves but we need answers otherwise, it is not far-fetched to imagine that in a few years there will be the Olympics of doped and who fraud, in any field, will not think of making a mistake because he will be exonerate as well as Ulrich said: “I think there’s a fraud when one takes advantage unduly. I wanted to promote equal opportunities.”

The leaders always knew that they have to speak the language of emotions, and sometimes they did eliciting the most negatives and brutals. So we have to know how to support the emotions that elicit positive reactions in ourselves and in our community. In the direction to reach a new definition of success – beyond the money and the power – Arianna Huffington organized a talk about this theme, Third Metrics Conference

One of the ideas discussed was this: people want to engage in something with all your heart in order to find a meaning (Ryumon Gutierrez Baldoquin). It is not just a philosophical idea but is the basis of motivation, so each of us wants to improve thanks to its commitment. The problem is that the idea of success at all costs is destroying this basic concept, it’s time to fight it, otherwise we will have a future that is increasingly doped.

We cannot live a life with fear of failure, there is no motivation supporting this lifestyle for a long time, the result is only an increase in stress and discomfort to live. We must learn to think and speak in terms of us and not of me and them. We have to leave the logic I win and you lose, if we we will think in term of us we will leave the logic of the winner, because we have pursued the interest of the community. So let us strive to put into practice the tenets that will make us get out of this negative success vision for our community, redefining it in terms of well-being, wisdom, return, empathy and ability to amaze us.

Wilkinson and the quantum physics: an unbelievable book

The first news is that Jonny Wilkinson is passionate about quantum physics. “All my life I have been obsessed with achieving perfection and was disappointed. Until one day I started looking for another way to get a different perception of the world and my work. First of all, I turned to Buddhism (…). And shortly after I found out that there were ties between my work and quantum physics. “In particular, to have fascinated Wilko is the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. The German scientist said that in certain fields natural laws do not lead to a complete determination of what happens in space and time, the occurrence depends form the game of chance. “If even in quantum physics not everything is controllable, Wilkinson must have thought, why should it be rugby? Better to relax.” There’s a first level that you can handle: the ball. If you kick the ball a hundred thousand times, in the end I can reach the same result in the game. And little by little I feel I can control everything. Then there is a second level, in which many things are inscrutable, in which another part of me is called into question, the part about instinct, deep emotions. And that’s where I can really be myself, connect to the world, and even learn something new.” So it turns out that, paradoxically, for Jonny the kick is the least interesting of rugby. At one point, describes him as “a work from postman.”

Sport dance

Nobody ever talks about the sport dance , than we imagine a sport for the elderly or for those who love dancing. Certainly, it is also this but in reality it is much more. I have seen going into a hall to assist in the preparation of a dance competition. First we were teenagers, adults and over 65 or as it is used in other sports (swimming and running) athletes and master . The competitions are held throughout the day and the couples than winning go through various selections. Each dance has a duration of 90 seconds and each couple must complete a group of five. It’s a complex sport that requires technique, physical fitness, emotional control, expressiveness and perfect fusion between the partners. If any of these elements is missing the performance will not be effective. Requires competent coaches and like any other sport is not enough to have danced, albeit at a high level, to be able to teach beginners as well as experienced ones. For the public is a spectacular sport and nice to see.
