Football: money is not the only thing to have a happy life

Almost 40 years ago Terry Orlick wrote a chapter titled “From Hero to Zero”: “The challenge is not only in pursuing excellence but in doing so without destroying the rest of your life.” How many top athletes has been committed to pursue this positive goal? That is to say, be aware and committed to distinguish between “my career is the only thing” or “my career is the most important thing I have” or better “my career and my life out of sport are both important.”

Today it seems that many football players in UK do not live following the goal to pursue their personal wellbeing.

  • The average career of a footballers is 8 years
  • 5 years after the retirement 40% of the players declare bankruptcy
  • After 1 year, 33% of footballers get divorced
  • Today the average salary in Premiere League is 2,5 millions of pounds, not sufficient to guarantee a happy life

The soccer Italian problems come also from the coaches too guaranteed

The matches in Italian football premiere league too often demonstrate that concepts such as:

  • Go beyond your limits and maintain high standards
  • Excel for themselves
  • Compete to outdo the other

are not part of the current culture of the teams with some rare exceptions.

The question is why  atsuccessful professional football players is not taught to start the match with the determination and concentration required to play a match. The coaches think their team will play in a certain way, then this is not the case. Maybe compared to the big Italian coaches of the past than at present they have become so presumptuous as to convince themselves that their presence is enough to inspire courage? Maybe because they earn too much and are too guaranteed from the economic point of view, then, based on this condition they believe not be criticized for this reason they do not use collaborators who might represent the critical consciousness that is missing in them.

On the contrary, the experiences of high-level leadership in the business teach just that, alongside the great leaders there is always another expert that confront openly and verifies that their ideas are implemented. Perhaps the coaches could learn to use collaborators able to know if their players are willing to play till the end, or are willing to give up an inch at a time. Why this is the difference between winning and being dominated.

We need a new definition of success

We need a definition of success more humane and sustainable. Since too many years we are living  in a society where every day we see the disastrous effects of the idea that the only thing that matters is winning. The big financial frauds and diffusion of doping in sports are here to show the pervasiveness of this mentality.
Only in these days we have the confession of a former cyclist Jan Ulrich, to be doped, the explosion of new details on the case of Schwazer and the mass protests in Brazil against the policy of the government that employs too many resources for the football World Cup  and the Olympics.

They are huge issues that dominate the nations themselves but we need answers otherwise, it is not far-fetched to imagine that in a few years there will be the Olympics of doped and who fraud, in any field, will not think of making a mistake because he will be exonerate as well as Ulrich said: “I think there’s a fraud when one takes advantage unduly. I wanted to promote equal opportunities.”

The leaders always knew that they have to speak the language of emotions, and sometimes they did eliciting the most negatives and brutals. So we have to know how to support the emotions that elicit positive reactions in ourselves and in our community. In the direction to reach a new definition of success – beyond the money and the power – Arianna Huffington organized a talk about this theme, Third Metrics Conference

One of the ideas discussed was this: people want to engage in something with all your heart in order to find a meaning (Ryumon Gutierrez Baldoquin). It is not just a philosophical idea but is the basis of motivation, so each of us wants to improve thanks to its commitment. The problem is that the idea of success at all costs is destroying this basic concept, it’s time to fight it, otherwise we will have a future that is increasingly doped.

We cannot live a life with fear of failure, there is no motivation supporting this lifestyle for a long time, the result is only an increase in stress and discomfort to live. We must learn to think and speak in terms of us and not of me and them. We have to leave the logic I win and you lose, if we we will think in term of us we will leave the logic of the winner, because we have pursued the interest of the community. So let us strive to put into practice the tenets that will make us get out of this negative success vision for our community, redefining it in terms of well-being, wisdom, return, empathy and ability to amaze us.

The coach opposition to the mental coaching

One of the factors that limit the diffusion of the mental coaching among athletes lies in the resistance that coaches show toward this activity. For many of them the psychological preparation is “something more” to use only in those cases in which athletes show obvious mental limitations that hinder their performances. Coaches usually send to the sport psychologist those athletes that they call “athletes good for training” and that they have poor performances in the race. In other words, they send those athletes on which after having “tried everything” cannot “unlock”. Athletes who start a program of mental improvement from a negative state  hope to achieve positive results in a short time, which is very difficult for athletes who often have the same problem for years, have never done anything to change and live every race with the hope that will be the one that will overcome their problem. In addition, these athletes are not used to invest economically on them, except for a few sessions of physiotherapy for physical problems, and then think about having a mental coach for at least a year with which to carry out a specific program becomes an additional obstacle. In favor of the athletes must be said that in Italy the sports federations and sports organizations of the State do not offer any support and, to be more clear, this sport side it’s completely misunderstood. Consequently, what are the athletes who attend programs of psychological preparation? They are usually the strongest athletes, those can win a medal in the international competitions, they understand the added value of mental work and are willing to invest financially. They are also the parents of those who practice sports such as tennis, golf and shooting in the planning of future career also consider this aspect and these athletes are generally motivated to follow these programs. To reduce the economic impact on the individual, sports clubs could arrange meetings with their athletes, but nobody else does. On the other hand it is extremely rare for a coach to follow a program of psychological training, so while on the one hand we tend to ever more extreme knowledge for physical  and technical training, with regard to psychological ones we are still left at the principle of the stick and the carrot that everyone interprets according to his/her personal experiences.

Contano solo i soldi?

Basta saperlo!
