Physical activity as a basic vital sign

Physical activity has been shown to reduce health care costs, prevent chronic disease, enhance productivity and improve quality of life. Numerous studies reinforce the common-sense principle of maintaining health through physical activity and exercise and with its ability to treat and prevent obesity, diabetes, heart and bone disease and other chronic conditions, exercise is powerful medicine, indeed. For these reasons in US 50 universities, scientific and professional organizations have wrote to Barack Obama to emphasize in his State of the Union Address the relevance of the promotion of the physical activity. The main points of the letter are:

  • Public education programs to ensure that all Americans understand the benefits of healthy lifestyles and how to take advantage of the range of options open to them;
  • Professional education so that health professionals consider physical activity a vital sign like blood pressure and cholesterol levels, to be monitored and tracked regularly;
  • Electronic Medical Records that include fields for physical activity. As health provider systems convert to EMRs, they can easily begin to track exercise as a vital sign;
  • Medical school curricula that give all physicians an adequate grounding in how to counsel patients on healthy lifestyles, and
  • Increased opportunities for underserved populations to enjoy exercise and physical activity, by addressing disparities in the built environment, access to equipment and other barriers.

Increase the well-being with some easy behaviors

In order to promote our well-being in 2014 we must practice some simple actions, each of which can reduce everyday stress and increase the self-control. These are activities that do not require special quality to be practiced, the only skill required is  to believe in the pursuit of own health and well-being. They are:
Relax – It ‘s an activity that can be carried out for 10 minutes on a daily basis. There are relaxation techniques that can be performed in any place, allowing to reduce stress at any time of the day.

Meditate – I do not necessarily need to go to a Zen master to learn to meditate, you can begin by imagining for a few minutes of being in your favorite place and you can do it at the end of relaxation .

Physical activity – We need to walk at least 30 minutes each day, we will not become athletes but body will thank you.

Being with the people we love – A positive social life is important and be connected with the people we love is essential to share positive experiences and feel supported in times of trouble .

Reading – Dedicate time to read novels, short stories and poems is a nourishment for the soul, and then we have to turn off  internet and mobile and read whenever we can even just a few pages.

Physical activity and wellbeing

Exercise should be prescribed by your doctor(http://sante.lefigaro.fr/actualite/2012/11/01/19384-lexercice-physique-devrait-etre-prescrit-sur-ordonnance). It has been proposed in France by Jacques Bazex de l’Academie de medecine, in view of the physical activity program for the Ministry of Health is about to do. Sports prescribed as antibiotics, aspirin or anti-depressants. For some disadvantaged groups should be paid by the State.
According to the Lancet the sedentary lifestyle would be responsible for one death out of 10, as well as tobacco: 5,30 millions.(http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/The_Lancet_study_suggests_inactivity_now_as_deadly_as_smoking).
While here  in Italy this issue has not included in any politic agenda, the others go forward with ideas and concrete programs. Even no newspaper has reported this news, which I took from Carlo Nesti: http://www.torinogranata.it/?action=read&idnotizia=33924

Walking and cycling must become the norm

“Walking and cycling should become the norm for short journeys rather than driving a car, the government’s health advisory body has recommended in an attempt to tackle a national epidemic of inactivity and obesity which now causes as much harm as smoking.

In strongly-worded advice, which places significant pressure on the government to increase the extent of safe walking and cycling routes, theNational Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) urges local authorities, health bodies, workplaces and schools to do all they can to assist people in active travel.

The report notes that almost two-thirds of men and nearly three-quarters of women in England are not sufficiently active to maintain their health, with the results little better for children.

This amounts to a significant public health problem to which increased walking and cycling is a key solution, said Dr Harry Rutter, an adviser to the Department of Health-funded National Obesity Observatory, who led the Nice study.

“Only a minority of people in England get enough physical activity to improve their health,” he said. “This creates a huge and often invisible burden of illness and reduced quality of life, but most people seem to be unaware of the scale of that burden. Across the population, lack of physical activity causes roughly the same level of ill-health as smoking does.

“We all face barriers in changing our lifestyles and many of us feel we don’t have the time or the inclination to add regular physical activity into our lives. But walking and cycling – to work, to school, to the shops or elsewhere – can make a huge difference. It’s an opportunity to make these activities part of normal routine daily behaviour.”

The 126-page report lays down recommendations for many public and private institutions, which have no statutory force but carry some influence given Nice’s position. They also coincide with the advent next April of the NHS’s health and wellbeing boards, where local health chiefs will collaborate to improve community health.

It urges local authorities to devise a coherent, long-term plan for boosting active travel to be at the centre of every policy, avoiding the piecemeal efforts exemplified by the cursory and suddenly-vanishing bike lanes familiar to most UK cyclists. Schools are being advised to provide secure bike parking and introduce “walking buses” where pupils walk to and from school in a supervised group, with employers similarly guided on helping staff ditch their cars.

The report’s authors say they are aware of the ambition of their plan, with the average Briton now walking or cycling 80 miles a year less now than they did a decade ago and the percentage of journeys made by bike remaining at about 2%, against 26% for the Netherlands and 19% in Denmark.”

For the politicians sport is not in agenda

To increase  at least of 10% the people who lead a physically active lifestyle should be part of any government project, when we talk about?

The pyramid of the physical activity

Game 7 days out of 7, biking and swimming up to 5 times a week, dance and soccer 2 or 3. Staring  the  perfect ’doses’ for any sport is the Pyramid of physical activity presented at the conference ‘Milanopediatria’, going from today until Sunday in Milan. Along the lines of well-known food pyramid, the pediatriciens have decided to establish the pattern for the exercise. Which to choose? When to practice it? And for how long? The new pyramid, organized in 4 steps, try to answers to these questions. Helping parents to navigate and promote good rules for their children. “The suggestions outlined have been proven effective, for the benefit of health status – ensures Marcello Giovannini, president of  ’Milanopediatria’ -. It has been seen that to walk forone hour involves an expenditure of energy nearly 3 times higher than that obtained through the same time watching TV, with a significant increase in the ratio of fat oxidation and carbohydrate oxidation. ” The base of the pyramid, therefore, is to perform physical activity every day. It means to “walk the dog, take the stairs, helping her mother with housework, play with friends”  say the pediatricians. In short, to move without any particular limit. “Not programmed exercise , in fact, it would seem that not only allows an increase in spending energy, but it could encourage a more active lifestyle. Temptation of sedentary activities (TV, video games) and to eat more are much stronger indoors than outdoors. ” The second step of the Pyramid of the sport shows instead the exercises to be performed 3/5 times a week, and that are “aerobic exercises like cycling, fast walking, running, skating, swimming,” for the desired time. “They are the most suitable exercises – state pediatricians – because they induce an increased oxidation of lipids. Specifically, cycling and swimming are recommended especially if the mass weight is high and injuries are predictable favorites by the exercise.” Climbing the Pyramid, the third step is devoted to physical activity programmed to perform 2/3 times a week, 50 minutes each time. In this case, most suitable sports are  martial arts, dance, an hour of tennis or soccer or volleyball. When choosing the type of exercise is best to practice group activities – suggest doctors – possibly with peers with the same weight problems, because children and especially obese adolescents feel less inhibited in making these group activities. The approach to sports should also be calibrated to the real possibilities of the child and implemented in a progressive manner ” . Finally, the top of the pyramid that represents the space to devote to television and video games: very little. The invitation of pediatricians is “trying to sit less than an hour.”

Youngs spend few time outdoor

Often the countries of Northern Europe hit me for the simple and direct questions that arise, as well as the solutions they find. This time in Britain they have asked ourselves the question: How often do your children play outside? More or less than when you were a child? Have safety fears make you keep your children at home? The government cuts have reduced opportunities to play sports close to home?

So there it arises the problem of the need to increase the time that young people spend outdoors and in a natural environment because it is considered as necessary for their well-being and development of personal autonomy. Therefore it is hoped that adults are increasingly aware of this need and act accordingly. Meanwhile, in Britain this week was the launch of the Love Oudoor Play Campaign (http://loveoutdoorplay.net/).

In the same in  Italy we are still debating whether to increase the hours of physical education to school without reaching a settlement, when we enter … maybe someone will put this further question, namely that for the youngs are not given enough hours and we will have to do something more. Perhaps our grandchildren will enjoy  of this changes … those who in the meantime did not leave for another country.

Health benefits of physical activity

September is the month that coincides with the time to renew subscription to sports centers or approaching them for the first time. The economic crisis has reduced many to be able to continue in this positive habit. In Italy they are, in fact, 4.500.00 who claim not to be able to meet this cost. Nevertheless, carry out regular physical activity is essential to staying healthy, many people know this and organized to carry it out at home, thus reducing costs and saving time. In support of this commitment and personal knowledge of many others who still are not aware of what are the health benefits reached by those who lead a physically active lifestyle, this is the list of the advantages:
  • A reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.

Heatlh & wellbeing: is it an issue?

I’s today news that the Quarterly Report on economic and social situation of the European Commission gives to Italy the first place for job losses and reduced earnings of families. We are a country on the ropes like a boxer that someone claims to drop permanently to the ground. We are a country in which not only there is less work and earns  but at too much people lack the health, because they ruin with junk food or eating excessive amounts of food. This phenomenon has a very high social cost per year, amounting to 8.3 billion, corresponding to 6.7% of public costs that it is lost in health care, mainly for cardiovascular disease and diabetes, but also for dieticians and psychologists (in Use the cost of obesity to the State affects 9% of the total medical spending, 147 billion dollars). Costs that can only get worse: in 2025 it is expected that 43% of adults will be obese. The war for the dissemination of a wellness culture  is possible to do it but nobody in Italy talks about. It has no special cost, does not require agreements between the social parts, does not require that the European economic situation changes, it is irrelevant to the value of the spread. I wonder if anyone, from the ministry of health, do anything because this issue is not political battleground that is the main art practiced by the politiciens or because the governement in Rome as in the regions do not understand or they minimize this issue concerning the health of the citizens. It could also be that the idea of improving diet and  to promote the diffusion of the physical activity are solutions  so trivial that it is believed that every person should be able to find the best solution for him/her-self.

The rules to restart with the physical activity

Returned to work one begins to think again to restart the physical activity that most people leave during the summer. For those who did not move, the secret lies in gradually. It is as if the body is aroused from sleep, for this reason we have not be in a hurry or to stress it with efforts at this time exhausting. It’s much better to start with workouts short and moderate. The goal must be the persistency in time of physical activity whether it be running, swimming, cycling or whatever. It is not important to run today 1 hour but to achieve this maybe in two months. The gradualness is the basic principle to be observed. It has to be applied to adults who pass the from the condition of sedentary to the physical activity, you should be aware that it is not important “to do so much” in the first week to prove to himself and to others that in the end I was not so out of shape but it is  instead relevant to continue to be active even after six months. The same concept applies  for the  individuals trained. Now the sport in Italy it is mainly practiced by  adults from 40 to 60 years old. We are not teenagers, recovery times are much slower and the body is aging. Therefore, to start gradually allows the physical apparatus to regain day-by-day movements known and to reach the specific activation  to the activity that takes place. This simple thing is the most difficult to do. I would say that does not let anyone, including me. This is because we should think but we do not do it and let ourselves be dominated by passion. We run or swim or play tennis because we like it, without being forced by coaches to follow a well-defined program as it should do athletes, and thinking “so I’ve always done it this way”.  For many people problem is not the performance, we know that we can train better, but we are happy with what we do. The problem is the age that at some point asks the bill and then asks you if you want to continue to do as you’ve always heard that you should have. If you take this road someone’ll look wiser, but you know that it is only out of necessity and certainly not by choice.
