There is a relation between excellence and talent?

We often talk of talent as something strongly linked to excellence in performance. Often talk about talent is used as a criterion to eliminate some athletes, because according to someone they do not possess it or it’s used to nitpick forgetting the global relevance of the athlete. At this regard, the thought of a champion like Michael Phelps can serve to reflect on how much the athlete’s mental attitude is the main aspect to coach him/her to provide excellent performances.

“People say I have a great talent, but in my opinion excellence has nothing to do with talent. It is about what you choose to  believe and how determined you are to get there. The mind is more powerful than anything else.” (Michael Phelps)

The reasons for the rebirth of Roma

The change of  Roma attitude during the matches and  its consequences: best play, individual fighting spirit, strong cohesion and sense of belonging is a positive not only for Roma, first in the championship, but for Italian football. The first step towards this change came from the different organization of the management, clearer, with no overlap in key leadership roles, which led to the choice of the players to be sold and which ones to enter, paying attention to the budgetary needs and to take not only good players but  also with the personality needed to play at a high level. The second step is represented by the choice of a coach not glamorous or philosopher but concrete. From the psychological point of view he is like the classic father’s harsh but fair; so players have felt respected and from this new environment and the interweaving of these relations was born the actual team condition. This result shows that in order to win a team  must have an effective corporate organization and a coach (the team leader) that enhances the players, not excluding them for a personal prejudice and enforcing rules simple and well defined. Only then starts the technical and tactical coaching.

It’s need to coach the mind to compete

Although many coaches recognize the decisive role played by the mind in favor/hinder the sport performance, there are still many who think that mental difficulties are overcome by training more or participating in more competition. Typically those who think in this way are convinced that at some point the athlete will be unlocked and will start for him/her a new winning phase of  the career. Briefly, you have to compete, gain experience and then, won the first tournament, things will settle. I meet many athletes and they tell me stories like these one but with a different and negative end,  because they still have the same problems, affecting more and more their self-confidence. They say that they train well and in competition they always repeat the same mistakes. I then explain, what I have repeated hundreds of times and that is that to have the technical skill (whatever sport) does not mean to know how to cope with the race, which is a different thing. When these athletes become aware of this difference, usually calm down and at this point I can explain to them that follow a program of mental coaching is really helpful to learn how to drive your own mind in the race.

Kathmandu Marathon – ‘It’s like running with a cigarette in your mouth’

“Last Saturday, my friend Richard and I were brave enough to enter the Kathmandu marathon, or rather the half marathon as doing the full distance in this mad traffic would have been suicidal…

It was definitely done in the finest Kathmandu style! When I arrived at the marathon registration desk at 5.30am last Saturday – I was already half an hour late – the person who was supposed to take my details was nowhere to be found. “She will be here in a minute,” said race director, Nilendra Shrestha, who had taken on the brave task of organising the marathon in the Nepalese capital for the seventh time in a row.

More than 6,000 runners were expected to participate in the event, which featured a full marathon, a half-marathon and a 5km-fun-run, however, a lot of the aspirants must have overslept, as the stadium – the start of the race – did not seem very busy that morning.

“Every year we want to block the roads, but it’s just not possible here. We don’t have alternative roads and for our citizens and drivers using the roads, this is still something they are not used to,” explained Shrestha, who once lived in Germany and ran across what used to be West Germany in the 1980ies. “Well, it’s certainly a lot easier to do something like this in Europe.”

I must say, I do take my hat off to the organisers; putting together an event like this in Nepal must be somewhat of a nightmare. Kick-off was supposed to be at 6am, which seems very early in European marathon terms, but here in Kathmandu it means you might actually have a chance to beat the traffic. Well, that’s what I thought. Being a good and punctual German, I walked towards the start at about 5.58am, however, there was nobody to be seen. Not one single person was ready to start at 6am. ‘Oh well’, I thought and ambled back into the stadium, where people were still chatting, registering, stretching or just hanging about.”

It's still fun though!

The sport psychologist role in the national team

It was held at the Sports School of Italian Olympic Committee a workshop about the role of different professionals, who work in the national team before and during major sport events. In relation to the role of the sport psychologist I have highlighted what are the main activities to be carried out:

  • The essential psychological preparation has been carried out previously
  • Do not introduce new strategies and procedures, but to help athletes to follow their habits
  • The psychologist should not be obsessed with “doing”
  • Provide 24 hours of service and availability to advise in any environment
  • The sport psychologist must be prepared to the uniqueness of the Olympic Games
  • Follow the program prepared earlier
  • Being responsive and effective
  • Promote the use of routine and daily plans
  • Help athletes stay focused on the competition without being distracted from the atmosphere of the Olympic village
  • Helping athletes and coaches not to put too much emphasis on race
  • Helping the team to create a positive atmosphere and facilitating effective solutions
  • Being psychologically prepared to support the coaches
  • Develop strategies for the management of interpersonal relationships
  • Check and manage the interpersonal communication between staff members: free time management, relations with the head of team delegation and federal managers, media management

Interesting football championship: the surprise of the next matches

The Italian football championship this year is so far the most interesting of these years, because it brings out  new situations with which the teams have to face beyond their technical level:

Juve must demonstrate that it continues to have the will to win and the Conte’s dramatization related to Pirlo, not just any one, who did not go to the bench after replacing him but in the locker room it’s a sign of how the coach considers decisive to share what happens in the field from the bench to uphold the players’ determination.

Napoli have a match with it seems easy against Sassuolo but it should not think to have already won the game, this is certainly one of the games in which it can be measured the team willingness to win the championship.

Roma was often a team that at the first positive results thought to be already at an end the championship, it must show patience, forget about winning matches and stay focused only to play the next game.

Milan has many problems including injuries and mental weaknesses of Balotelli. Of course, as everyone says Mario is at a crossroads, scrambling like Cassano or become the symbol of Italian football talent, but who helps him? Not just the good will of the player or tell him to change because that happens, he needs someone to lead him to become an adult.

Inter started well also in the last season but it continued bad, it will change this year? Mazzarri looks more confident and convinced Stramaccioni and this is important.

Balotelli has to change

Balotelli can become a wasted talent, with the advantage of living in a golden world that relieves the failures with the money he earns in any case. Perhaps it will follow the way of Cassano, happy defeated in a Italian minor team, after having been the talent of Italian football. Eternal guys who do not accept the rules because they consider their talentsuperior to the need to respect them. Their problem is that they do not know they have a problem, for this reason they continue to repeat the same negative behaviors. The problem is represented instead by others, who do not understand them and that limit their footballing genius. Collaboration and team spirit are the social dimensions of which they ignore the meaning, there are only them, they are member of the Me-generation. Place themselves at the center of the world and they are the parameter to which the rules have to adjust. Narcissists: yes magnificently and truly negative. May be they couldchange, certainly if they understand that the world can do without them.

Roma and Napoli must stay cool

Roma and Napoli have an internal enemy that they must beat, this is the euphoria to be since a long time alone at the top and have won their first four matches, the last of which was particularly rich in meaning . For Roma it was the derby against Lazio, which is perhaps the most important match to play in the season and often in this city has the value of an entire season. Napoli has not won since the days of Maradona with AC Milan at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium, the Scala of football. Therefore, these two wins have certainly boosted the confidence of these teams in their capabilities. At this point it could be possible fall into the trap of euphoria, where everything seems to be positive and the team starts to play with lower concentration, especially the matches perceived as easier. If this happens it would be a serious error, that the two coaches should avoid. Games with teams that do not aspire to the top of the ranking should be addressed to the maximum of the commitment, because if the teams lose these points they cannot be recovered. They will then direct matches with the other best teams that will determine who will win the championship, but if they have lost points, any successes in direct confrontation does not allow to outdistance the other teams. Therefore, the mentally toughest games are those that appear more obvious. In this regard it’s necessary that the teams should remember that in football the goal is a rare event and that sometimes just a shot to do a goal, while other times 10 shots are not enough.

Wanted football fans

Italians and football divorce: in 2009, the fans were 56% of the population in subsequent years declined steadily up to the present 36%. Now they are a minority, large, in which increasingly dominates the “militant” component: the “ultras” which accounted for 47% of the fans. Instead, the fan “mild” represents only the 20%. In essence, football fans in Italy  are fewer and fewer people, and individuals increasingly heated and reactive. The reasons for this neglect depend on three factors: the Italian football scandals, the violence in stadiums and the decline of the teams at European level. Finally, two other data. With the predominance of  militant fans is increased cheering against opponents, declared by 56%. Finally, only 20% of the fans go to the stadium, while most follow the matches not only the traditional media but also on the internet.

Benitez’s philosophy: “without haste but without break”

From “tiki-taka” of Barcelona, to the suffocating aggression of Juventus, to “without haste but without a break” of Napoli. Each team has its own philosophy based on the ideas of the coach. At the basis of any form of play there is an idea of football and I think that Benitez has a really good idea. I’is based  giving responsibility to the players, which are left free for a day after winning the match against Borussia, even if the next game is against Milan; which focuses on training with the ball to foster a positive climate in training and that it does not upset the players with a physical training too intense. It could say that we are just beginning the journey to say so well of the Benitez’s method. We forget, in this case, that a successful start into on two fronts, league and champions league, is very difficult and it have succeeded it’s a significant result just to confirm the validity of this Napoli new system.
