We need Gattuso

In a period in which the great ideals have disappeared, our main reference points are again individuals who by their actions demonstrate that commitment, sacrifice, spirit of cooperation, responsibility, toughness and sense of belonging are not empty words but have a deep sense, whose practice is based on the life of society. The tribute that the whole world wanted to give to Nelson Mandela is one example, we need to identify with someone bigger than us, to support us in daily attempt to resist and maintain hope in the possibility that there is a better world. Why the lives of these people from Gandhi to Martin Luther King, Kennedy until Mandela are proof that you can be daring. Like all myths are also perceived as unattainable, they have led exceptional lives, paying the total membership to their ideals. We know that we will never be like them, we do well to keep them in the eyes and the heart but to live our daily lives with consciousness we also need other examples closer to us, that not only shine but also showing their flaws. Among those who follow the sport and football, Rino Gattuso is one of these people. His nickname is “Growl” and he has always been the soul of the team, the hard worker, who fight until the end, performing the function of allowing the team stars to be free to express their skills, because he was there to support them. Gattuso is certainly not a myth but as a player he represented those positive qualities that are the foundation of the community life. That’s why we need to Gattuso and many others like him. Public support he has received in recent days it seems to me a sign of this account of the person, which is evident in the words of the Cremona district attorney Roberto Di Martino: ” I personally find Gattuso very nice, I rooted for him in the national team when played, but I would have done honor to my profession if I had him for a treatment different from that of any other citizen? Gattuso is world champion for the story. However, he cannot be for justice .”  We need Gattuso is innocent because if they fall those like him, who are not the few big corrupt bankers or CEO, but there are the many people who are closer to us, not the great and  unattainable myths but who we know, think of building a better society will be tough. Gattuso innocent allows me to believe that my neighbor is honest and this helps me to be me too.

What does we do to control our daily stress?

We know that stress is something that creeps first within ourselves and then explodes taking hold of our emotions and our way of thinking. Stress is experienced by top samples and coaches but also by anyone of us who wants to improve and that every day cope with the stress of the daily competition. Today there is no time to relax, we are often angry, disappointed or tired. Relax is seen as another commitment, an extra effort or as impossible until we have not solved the problems of the moment, or as something that can be done by those who have time. It’s not clear that it is precisely in hard times that it is important to spend time to reduce stress. It’s not enough the past experience not be stressed out, we have to act actively to reduce it. This idea is rather diffuse and for this reason we are increasingly stressed.
The first step that anyone can do to reduce your stress is to walk half an hour every day and spend time during the week chatting with friendly people.

The numbers to accept to become excellent

Sport consists of statistics which can explain the fitness and technical expertise of an athlete, rather than the quality of the game and performance. As sport psychologist I want to give some numbers to highlight what needs to be done to aspire to build a winning mentality :

  • 3 – are the keys to success : commitment and dedication, family and friends, excellent coaches.
  • 4 – are the basic psychological skills: learning from experience, relaxation, positive self-talk and mental repetition.
  • 6 – are the stages of the athlete’s career: fun, moving, learn to train, train to train, learn to compete, learn how to win, retirement and career transition.
  • 7 – advanced psychological skills: goal setting, stress management, concentration, race management, performance evaluation, management of extra-sport life, coach -athlete relationship.
  • 700 – are the hours of training of a junior athlete.
  • 1,200 – are the hours of annual training of top athlete.
  • 10,000 – are the hours needed to become expert as athlete.
  • many thousands – are the mistakes to accept.

The Dan Plan and 10.000 hours to become progolf

The Dan Plan

Dan Laughlin, the thirty year old photographer, who three years ago decided to become a professional golfer from scratch is testing the theory of the psychologist Anders Ericsson that is possible if it takes 10,000 hours of practice. Dan after three years and 5.000 hours got a handicap of 5.2 and still be covered almost half of the way. Will he make to achieve this dream which nobody would have bet? What it’s certain is that so far has already achieved something important, to demonstrate that an adult person, even without any previous competitive experience in sport, thanks only to his commitment can get a surprising result for the low handicap achieved in such a short time.

Ability, motivation and attitude

Go back to think on what it means excellence with Lou Holtz‘s thought, football coach, it may be useful

“Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.”

What is your attitude during training?

We are what we do daily

Aristotle said that “We are what we do consistently. Excellence then is not an act but a habit.” In fact, the sport is full of stories of young people who have been ruined by their talento (physical and technical), because they thought this gift was enough to be successful and then when life put them in face of conclusive evidence they have lost and disappeared. Because we are what we do every day; study, work and training for athletes. So excellence comes from the habit of training with a total commitment and dedication. Who does not understand that this is the way to go day by day believes to go ahead mainly with the natural talent, but unfortunately it’s only an illusion that the first bumps will destroy.

Young sport professionals: which future for them in Lazio

Women fight always against that ceiling glass made of old habits and discrimination, often indirect, which makes it difficult for them to practice certain professions, progression in careers or taking positions of responsibility, regardless of the professional skills. This is particularly evident in sports where women in positions of responsibility are almost absent.  At the same time we are living in a time when the ability to provide high-level performance, and make appropriate decisions when needed, without losing sight of the overall vision and long-term goals are necessary and critical skills. In fact, one of the most significant challenges that businesses are facing concerns precisely the identification, selection and development of individuals able to work successfully at the level of middle and senior management. To meet this challenge in sports is not possible to relegate most of the human resources in roles less relevant and profitable: sports organizations must then select their talents without gender discrimination.

They must , therefore, plan ahead for the development of women believe that they can achieve leadership positions, using more imaginative in retaining the best .
At this regard they have been completed two training courses relating to “The value of the difference in the management  of sport organization” and “Sport director: a new profession for young people” implemented within the Project PATHS FOR EUROPEAN SPORT – training for an enterprise culture in sport, sponsored by the University of Tor Vergata, Federculture and Sportlink , co-financed by the European Union and approved by the Region of Lazio.

This project involved 34 young men and women aspiring entrepreneurs and professionals in the sports industry. It will inevitably stimulate a serious reflection on the current situation of the policies for sport  in Italy, starting from the requests made by the participants of the training and the evaluation of the sport development potential. The next step will be on December 20 with a meeting between the young people involved in the project and the manager of Lazio Region, which represents a moment of shared discussion concerning the future of the sport in Lazio: from the sport plants to the enhancement of human resources. Sharing that takes into account all the main social actors involved: institutions, universities , sport associations and  future sport professionals .

Let’s take a break from daily stress

Exhausted from an environment which constantly asks us answers

let’s take a break

and reflect on this thought that Marcus Aurelius expressed thousands of years ago

“We have power over our own mind, not on external events. Realize this and we will find ourtrength. “
