Mind and technique must be learned in the same time

Mindset and technical skill are trained through the development of specific game vision. The Barcelona videos on the goals at youth teams show how these two aspects are part of a way of teaching football. Barcelona has its own … how many Italian teams works in this way rather than just teach tactics and technique? Without the mind there is no game vision and the young players are trained to become soldiers.

Jonny Wilkinson mind

Some ideas from Jonny Wilkinson new book (Rugby quantique, with Etienne Klein e Jean Iliopoulos) useful for our reflexions.

“During the coaching you should do your very best. Means that it is not enough to pass the ball between the posts, but exactly in the middle.”
“Even before I kick, I feel the point at which I will be in contact with the ball. In my mind I see the exact trajectory of the ball.”
“The reason why I train mentally, is that in this way I can have a workout absolutely perfect.”
“I am never satisfied with what I do on the field. For this reason I continue to work after training with sessions of two or three hours. My goal is to create a confidence climate around me, to build strong and useful habits  supporting me. ”
“Rugby is the real team play, yes. As I said, we are always connected. It’s impossible to have the opportunity to score a punishment without the men in the fray.”
“Some time ago I read that the best way to achieve our goals is to help others achieve theirs. I am deeply convinced.”

The rugby mindset

Life is good. Said the Italian rugby player Lo Cicero when he left this sport. Others have not been able to say goodbye to rugby till now. Players like O’Driscoll and Wilkinson,  rugby legends, they had all from this sport and they did all for it, and they continue to stay on the field for another year. About the mind of the rugby players read more on:

The easy actions influencing positively the mind

Start to be more positive towards ourselves and more convinced to provide a good performance is based on the effective start showing some simple behaviors but can pass a performance from negative to positive.

These simple actions are:

  1. After a mistake take a deep breath and immediately imagine what must be done at that time.
  2. When you are too worried about the competition that you have to start, you have to imagine a positive past performance and let you feel the feelings you have while doing this exercise.
  3. During the warm-up you need to find the right feeling with the ball, the racket or the sail, you must feel that this tool is our own.
  4. During the warm-up must also be aware that the body is preparing for the competition and get pleasure from the sensations that tell that you are preparing well.
  5. You have to mentally imagine, for example if your sport is running, to feel the legs moving as you expect it to be or in case you feel too rigid insist in the warm-up to dissolve the useless muscle tensions . In relation to other sports it needs to identify what are the best exercises that tell you are ready, and devote yourself to feel the feelings for you right before the sport event.

These are just some examples of what it can do for an athlete to learn to drive himself to get in the best state of mind before and during the race.

Champions of mentality

In football has become a very frequent to say that we have a few champions and for this reason our teams have difficulty becoming competitive at international level. The coaches say that we have a few football talents and that is the problem. Usually the definition of talent is based on the technical skills of the players and their athletic skills, while the coaches pay less attention to their psychological skills. This result in that we probably have only a young champion, El Shaarawy and many others that are definitely good, but that do not emerge for continuity of play and the ability to make a difference in a team. I think we should take more account of the mental development of players and their ability to adapt to different forms of play of the teams in our premiere league. If this is not done, the risk is to have good players but showing adjustment difficulties in the transition from one team to another or play against opponents who have different  systems to play. In addition, the high expectations of these players and their societies may represent a further obstacle to their success. Needless to say that mental training programs could be useful to them to carry out this profession with success.

Futsal is not soccer

These days I attended futsal matches and I realized that it is an evolution of the traditional football from which it differs very significantly. Of course it is played with a ball, there is a goalkeeper and win the team that makes more goals but in other respects is another sport. Here in what in my opinion is different:

  1. during a time players can alternate every 3/4 minutes
  2. in the last two minutes the team can make more goals and overturn the result
  3. the error of a player can be fatal and determine one goal
  4. it is a game of high intensity, with continuous shots that reduce mental and physical energies of the players
  5. reaction times and decision must be very fast
  6. each player must always be ready to defend and attack
  7. the expulsion of a player determines a significant advantage to the opposing team
  8. it is required a constant and high level of coordination and cooperation
  9. the team have to play with high-intensity until the last second
  10. it requires a continuous emotional control over the harmful moods

Volleyball team: Bad the first

The Italian men volleyball team has played a bad game against Poland,  particularly it has lost its mind. The most experienced player, Mastrangelo, argued with the referee and the team disbanded in the fourth set. The coach was not able to transmit will to play in the time out as he should be. This defeat does not affect the Olympic track but the absence of a positive reaction of the team must be understood and solved, otherwise it will accompany the team as a ghost, ready to spoil the game at any point during the tournament.

Unsatisfied of what?
