Del Piero’s dream: play tennis

Today I spoke with a young tennis player who told me to have realized once again how crucial is the emotional control reading a thought of Alessandro Del Piero, who carry because actually worth much more than many words.

“My dream is to measure myself in an individual sport, I wonder if I will have time and opportunity to do so. This would increase my sense of challenge, my desire to always excel. I’d like to be a tennis player: the presence of the ball, to me, is essential, and in tennis the ball is. Then there’s the net, there is an opponent. a sport tremendous, I think that the enormous psychic tensions, in the end, make many players really specials, a bit as a golfers. The emotional commitment in tennis is absolute. there does not exist the bench, there is not a coach that keeps you out or  replace you. there’s just you. Indeed, you’re alone. ”

(From Alessandro Del Piero, Giochiamo ancora, p.80-81).

Serena Williams a superhuman

«It’s in the serve. Serena Williams may have won 30 Grand Slam titles, 46 women’s singles titles and four Olympic gold medals, but if you want to understand why she stands head and shoulders above her rivals in tennis, just watch the explosive moment at the start of a point as she propels the ball towards her opponent at up to 109mph.

To Williams, it’s a mystery to her how she generates such incomparable power. “Actually,” she remembers, suddenly, “when I was younger Billie Jean King said, ‘You have a great serve, it’s so natural,’ and I thought, ‘Really? Cool.’” Williams’s serve has since become the most talked-about part of her game, and the most feared by her opponents. This year at Wimbledon she broke the record for the number of aces in a tournament (102), and put a record 24 past the world No 1 Victoria Azarenka when they met in the semi-final. “Yeah, I feel like that kinda just started,” she says. “But I never hit my serves very hard. Like, I can hit it hard, but I don’t normally hit it super hard.”

You wonder what would happen if Williams did hit it hard. Her serve is already as fast as the average serve on the men’s tour and her second serve is regularly quicker than Andy Murray’s. Coaches and experts concur that it is the best serve the women’s game has ever seen, and Pete Sampras, who Williams modelled herself on when younger, has described it as “flawless”.

Most astonishing is that Williams’s raw strength is all natural, and not the result of hours in the gym. “No, honestly, I was born like this,” she says, in a laidback drawl. “To this day I don’t lift weights and I never have. I probably never will.” She thinks she inherited good genes from her parents – they’re both tall – but her physique has developed in a very different way from her sister Venus. In fact, Serena says she used to be the less powerful of the two. “When I was younger, I honestly would hit so soft,” she says, recalling the days she and Venus honed their skills on the cracked courts of LA’s unsavoury outskirts. “I was really small for my age, and it took me a long time to grow big and to grow strong. I think that’s kinda helped me learn to fight, you know what I mean? I learned to fight and be mentally stronger.”

Williams is happy to be seen as a “power player”, although she doesn’t think her own game is that different from that of her sister. “I’m more stubborn,” she admits. “If you have a great shot then I want to hit to your great shot. So Venus is… eesh… a little smarter.”

So will we see her recreate the famous Battle of the Sexes, when Billie Jean King took on Bobby Riggs (and won)? “Maybe one day,” she smiles. “But I don’t think I’m ready yet!”»

Inter errors

In my opinion, Inter has committed two serious errors in the last two matches, they did not have longer allowed to play as in the previous ones. The errors are represented by too much enthusiasm and too much complaining. Lost match against Atalanta was after a series of many matches won and the victory against Juventus. It was an important test because of the enthusiasm that was generated versus the team that it was to confirm against a team certainly less strong. The enthusiasm sometimes leads to a condition of satisfaction so in an unconscious way you start thinking that you cannot miss, and this leads to a reduction of the competitive energy, hard to recover during the game. In the next match against Cagliari, Inter president, said that the referee stopped the team to win. This constant complaining about the penalties not given blames on someone else what the team has not been able to achieve in the field. Enthusiastic and complaining are two sides of the same concept and it does not help the players to be aware of their strengths and weaknesses, it would take more coldness on the part of the Inter leadership.

Rugby: Italy-All Blacks

Rugby is commitment, progress and aggression and Italy has made one of his best games because it showed continuity with this attitude. Rugby is a sport where you cannot play without commitment, you can notpull the leg back, you ca not isolate yourself from the game, you cannot at the last second  to pass the ball to a teammate because you are afraid of making mistakes. Italian players today have done all this, playing at optimal level . They lost, it was assumed, struggling with intelligence until the last minute.

The pyramid of the physical activity

Game 7 days out of 7, biking and swimming up to 5 times a week, dance and soccer 2 or 3. Staring  the  perfect ’doses’ for any sport is the Pyramid of physical activity presented at the conference ‘Milanopediatria’, going from today until Sunday in Milan. Along the lines of well-known food pyramid, the pediatriciens have decided to establish the pattern for the exercise. Which to choose? When to practice it? And for how long? The new pyramid, organized in 4 steps, try to answers to these questions. Helping parents to navigate and promote good rules for their children. “The suggestions outlined have been proven effective, for the benefit of health status – ensures Marcello Giovannini, president of  ’Milanopediatria’ -. It has been seen that to walk forone hour involves an expenditure of energy nearly 3 times higher than that obtained through the same time watching TV, with a significant increase in the ratio of fat oxidation and carbohydrate oxidation. ” The base of the pyramid, therefore, is to perform physical activity every day. It means to “walk the dog, take the stairs, helping her mother with housework, play with friends”  say the pediatricians. In short, to move without any particular limit. “Not programmed exercise , in fact, it would seem that not only allows an increase in spending energy, but it could encourage a more active lifestyle. Temptation of sedentary activities (TV, video games) and to eat more are much stronger indoors than outdoors. ” The second step of the Pyramid of the sport shows instead the exercises to be performed 3/5 times a week, and that are “aerobic exercises like cycling, fast walking, running, skating, swimming,” for the desired time. “They are the most suitable exercises – state pediatricians – because they induce an increased oxidation of lipids. Specifically, cycling and swimming are recommended especially if the mass weight is high and injuries are predictable favorites by the exercise.” Climbing the Pyramid, the third step is devoted to physical activity programmed to perform 2/3 times a week, 50 minutes each time. In this case, most suitable sports are  martial arts, dance, an hour of tennis or soccer or volleyball. When choosing the type of exercise is best to practice group activities – suggest doctors – possibly with peers with the same weight problems, because children and especially obese adolescents feel less inhibited in making these group activities. The approach to sports should also be calibrated to the real possibilities of the child and implemented in a progressive manner ” . Finally, the top of the pyramid that represents the space to devote to television and video games: very little. The invitation of pediatricians is “trying to sit less than an hour.”

Pelè and the goal

Thirty years ago Desmond Morris, zoologist, wrote (The soccer tribe, 1981) that “One of the qualities that makes the goal so important is its rarity … every team has a  over a thousand contacts with the ball during the game. Which means that one player who hits the ball has less than one chance in a thousand mark … And it’s not to wonder that in the rare occasions when the goal is scored the gunner or goleador is high in tribal folklore, in the pedestal of a true hero and he becomes for his followers a sort of divinity to worship and adore. Undoubtedly, the greatest hero of modern times has been the Brazilian Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known throughout the world by his nickname Pelé. He did 1363 goals in his career, a total never reached by other modern players. ”

Pelè as Maradona and Messi are the exceptions that have made and make it seems easy and frequent scoring a goal. The goal, however, still remains a rare event. It is based on the ability of the players to create scoring opportunities, but also on exploiting the errors in defense of their opponents. A mistake can mean nothing in football, they serve hundreds of ball touches because one of these becomes a  winning shot, but in the same time any mistake can be fatal because the goal can be realized at any time. Be aware of this apparent contradiction it’s important to avoid to say after a goal, “We only made one mistake and immediately we have paid dearly, what bad luck!”

Roma mental problems

The Roma mental problems are evident in the behaviors of the players and the coach. For example in Pjanic that during the game insults Zeman. In Daniele De Rossi, who punches a defender in the penalty area. In the trivial errors of individual players who have yet terrific consequences for the team, determining the goals of the opponents. In the explanations of the Roma coach, who explains the failure only in terms of individual errors and not least of the defense and midfield players, who do not do their work. With this lack of cohesion and sharing difficulties they are not going anywhere.

To help people to find the reasons to be physically active

Every day it’s published a research on how important it is for our well being to lead a physically active life, this last tells us that few hours of movement a week lengthen the life of a few years (www.repubblica.it /salute)

It’s, however, equally important to understand how to promote physical activity in Italy knowing that among those who do not do sport on an regular basis:
• 1 male on 2 is overweight
• 1 male /women  on 10 are obese
• 1  women on 3 is overweight
