Helena Costa: A woman will coach a football team

For the first time a woman will train a team of Ligue 2, French second division: it is the Portuguese Helena Costa, 36 years old, a choice for the next season from Clermont-Foot, team of the city of Clermont-Ferrand.  Costa has already coached the women’s team of Iran and Qatar. His professional curriculum includes a past as talent scout for the Scottish Celtic. “This appointment – said the club – is expected to bring the club into a new era.”

Serena Williams

Serena Williams is among the 100 most influential people according Time.  Here follows the words written by Dwyane Wad, three NBA championship won with the Miami Heat, to celebrate her.

Coach the fighting spirit

The fighting spirit is an important psychological dimension that an athlete must show to possess and master. Being a fighter means to be tough and persistent  to maintain the best possible performance  even in the face of the competition adversities. You can exceed on aggression, becoming fouled and dangerous to themselves and others. Instead, you can give up after the first moment of difficulty, believing that there is nothing more to be done. One of the aims of the training, it shall be to increase the fighting so that it can be express in the race.

Teach the behaviors that enhance the technique

It seems to me that the sport technique is taught well to young people but coaches doesn’t spend a lot of time in teaching behaviors which are best to be able to use this technique. For example, in tennis once a young  has learned to serve, he must practice it in the best way the most number of times. At this point,  at the young player is no longer devoted as much attention because she has acquired the technical gesture. My opionion is that the tennis player despite having acquired this skill, he is not yet able to reproduce it. In the best case she is scrupulous, some will try to stay focused before performing the gesture and then serve. I believe that in this way the tennis player cannot know if  he’s ready to serve, while most probably do it in a mechanical way. Moreover, in this game neutral situation will never come; because the player will always serve after a game exchange and a pause of a few tens of seconds. As we all know, what you think in those seconds is important in determining how you are preparing for the service. The effectiveness of the service stems as much from the way the tennis player spends the seconds prior to the execution. The question is, how often did you train to positively prepare youryelves  to the service and, only later, to serve? You can have the best technique , but if the mind says No or is distracted , the tennis player will have a problem: he does not know how to solve it because he never practiced in this way.

Do we provide the right time to learn?

Are we really sure that we give to our boys and girls the time they need to learn? Or at some time we are in a hurry and say the classic phrase:

“… now  you have to win otherwise is useless!”

Training intensity and mental aspects

The mental component of a high-intensity workout is composed of at least three aspects.

  1. Includes mental skills that the athlete must show in that particular session and they must have already developed at high level, otherwise he will not be able to implement them on an ongoing basis in the training session that is starting.
  2. Includes those exercises or parts thereof in which the coach and the athlete are convinced that they can be performed in an optimal level (eg , for a sprinter who has to run 3x300m , probably it is expected that at least the first , albeit laborious , it will be run as planned. In trap shooting, a skilled athlete knows that she usually hits 20 out of 25 targets performing at the maximum. The same goes for the court, in which a tennis player knows how to play when he is totally focused on the game).
  3. Includes those exercises or parts that determine the quality of that single session. For example, it will be great if the sprinter will be able to run as scheduled on the third repeatition of 300m, or if the shooter will hit more than 20 plates that she usually hits; the same for the tennis player, he has to play well even if he feels tired or he has to maintain a high level of play quality in a training exercise longer and more challenging than usual.

These are the psychological aspects that come into play when training requires physical and mental strength and they are trained only in these moments.
