Tor de Géants it’s started, 330 km in Val d’Aosta

“Months and months of waiting and training. A long countdown. But finally the time has come.’s It’s of Sunday, September 8: The Tor des Géants starting from the center of Courmayeur (Italy). Heart in throat, aching legs, a thousand doubts and questions. Never mind, thoughts prohibited. You go for a walking trip on the High Track of Valle d’Aosta and 330 km with 24 thousand meters of altitude to climb before the finish of Courmayeur.

So much effort to return to the starting point? Yeah, but you have to do it within 150 hours, otherwise it is not worth. Contingencies of all kinds are around the corner (if you are corners of the trails at high altitude) and get to the bottom is far from obvious. Besides the charm of an ultra trail, even a trail endurance is defined as the Tor des Géants, is this: when you know when you start, but you do not know when, how and if you come. ”

Nyad completes Cuba to Florida swim

The fifth time proved the charm for long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad, who on Monday accomplished her lifeling dream of swimming from Cuba to Florida, a distance of 110 miles. On her latest attempt, the tenacious 64-year-old had a little help from new anti-jellyfish measures developed by scientists and prosthetics makers.

Australian swimmer Susie Maroney was the first person to make the watery trek in 1997 at the age of 22, but she swam within the protective confines of a shark cage. Nyad had no such protection, but she did have other anti-shark measures in place. On all of her swims, the accompanying kayakers have special sonar-emitting devices strapped to their craft that drive away sharks that come within a limited radius. Nyad’s team also keeps a shark-repelling chemical mixture tied to one of their boats.

There are also safety divers standing by to deal with sharks. As Nyad explained in a July blog post, if a shark had ever gotten dangerously close to her, the divers would have used special PVC piping to prod the animal to draw its attention away from her. They do not use guns or spears.

“We will not under any circumstances kill an animal on our crossing,” Nyad wrote.

The ethic code that parents and coaches have to respect

It starts a new sport season for all children enrolled in schools football (7000 in Italy), tennis, volleyball, swimming and so on. I hope it will be a happy year for play and learning for all, where it will be possible to learn that the sport means loyalty, commitment, fun, cooperation and respect. Children acquire easily these concepts and behaviors that follow, but they must be led by coaches and parents who act to meet these needs. Some suggestions for these adults:

  1. I will encourage sportsmanship by supporting all boys and girls, as well as coaches, parents and judges.
  2. My first goal is the physical and emotional development of boys and girls.
  3. I know that training must satisfy the young and not the adults.
  4. I will teach boys and girls to respect their opponents and judges.
  5. Regardless of skill level all will have to fun.
  6. I will fight against every abusive behavior showed by other adults.

Walk and find calmness

Today, September 1 marks somehow the end of summer and the beginning of a new period of activity. For many of us want to say to continue to have a sedentary lifestyle  spent in car or public transport and activities where you do not spend a bit of physical energy. We all know  that it’s unhealthy but most of us (in Italy) continue to live in this way by referring to an hypothetical tomorrow all forms of active life because we do not have the time today. At least in Italy there are not solutions shortly to this lifestyle: bike lanes are almost non-existent as well as spaces where walking sure not to be invested, many people take the car for less than one kilometer and young people have no incentive to walking, in many cities public transport  are infrequent and not on time and their use is not promoted by municipalities, at school  we have 2 hours per week of physical activity from elementary to high school,  without to mention the eating habits that lead to having more and more children overweight as 30% of adults. Nevertheless, we cannot just complain because it’s our life and we will not have a second to live. So we have to use our motivation and begin to live in a better way.

To do this we can start by two simple and inexpensive activities: walking 30 minutes every day and spend 15 minutes a day to develop thoughts pleasant and positive, (the one that goes by the saying – indulge in thoughts of peace and calmness -). Before to say that is good for nothing  and come back to our role as a victim of the times, let a little time to try, we will always be able to return to the old habits.
