During the competitions are you aware of your thoughts ?

Athletes are often unaware of the role of their thoughts during a race.

In my opinion they make these mistakes:

  • They confuse having respect for the opponents with being afraid of them
  • They have a vision of themselves as athletes not very global and have the myth of physical fitness and technical perfection
  • They do not think that their opponents probably lives the same situation as them
  • They do not mentally hold up their positive results instead of benefiting from them for the next ones
  • They don’t understand that being in difficulty is normal believing that it shouldn’t happen
  • They think “But he/she is a champion” and not that he/she has trained better than them

The emotion management during the Olympic Games

2018 Winter Olympics begin and many athletes to achieve their dream will find themselves in the position of having to provide the performance which is worth a life. The Olympic Games are the most important event for each athlete, it’s the competition that can change their sports career, much more than a world championship. it’s true for those who have already won and would like to repeat and for those athletes who are for the first time in the leading role. In fact, despite the doping scandals, winning a medal in the Olympics is still the dream of every athlete and for those who have a realistic chance of success is really all they don’t dared to think, for fear the desire  take place.

In these last days, the athletes have to handle their panic, they can swing by the peaks of confidence in their abilities, supported by the results obtained, with moments of sheer terror in which negative scenarios seem to take over. More rare that these emotions leaping those athletes who cannot aspire to the Olympic podium, who aspire to a good performance, which are already satisfied to compete during the world’s biggest sport event.

For others, those who compete for a medal, those at the top of the world ranking, the wait can be exhausting. They have to know how to handle this waiting phase, accepting this emotional background noise in all its shades, reducing the destructive emotions with constructive moods and thoughts. The race with themselves doesn’t begin just before the start moment, it has already begun in these days. Because the before determines the after, as you face the days immediately preceding determines how you will get to race day.

I often asked the athletes which the mental part of their warmup. For many consists to mentally repeat their performance or use key words, chosen by them, to reach a level of optimal emotional activation. This mental work determines a mixture of emotions, physical sensations and thoughts, used to be focused only on their performance. In this way, they lead themselves to the moments preceding the start, inside their mental bubble, totally caught up in what they’re doing; then they start and everything happens, or should happen, in a way apparently spontaneous.

Use the best mental habits of others to change ourselves

The thoughts of others are an opportunity to reflect on our situation, about how we are working to achieve our goals. One mistake we make easily is to believe that for the reason we are doing well,we must necessarily continue in the same way almost automatically, without sweat and committing less. In those moments we become relaxed, not focused, arrogant, thinking that the result should get of course.
To react to this wrong thinking, I report the Claudio Ranieri’s thought, his team, Leicester,  probably will win the English league and that despite having a lead of +8 points a few games left, he says:
“We have done a lot, but in reality nothing yet. Now we need to clean up the thoughts, do not read, do not listen, stay focused. Fighting for every ball and every moment, as so far. To think only about the next game.”

Do not copy the Murray’s thoughts

The Ten Commandments written by Andy Murray to support himself in the game have done the world tour and certainly they should not be copied. They are the ideas of a specific person and for him they have a value but they must not have it for other players.

As always, what it’s important is the mental process behind these words and that highlights the relevance of following a own personal guide to stay focused on the tennis career.

The issue is that, instead, most of  the young players have not been trained to follow a mental journey that keeps them focused on their goals even in difficulty times. Many of them do not know what they need to play a match with a winning mind, they rely on technique or the mood of the moment or the blows they are good … these guys will never get to be in the top 100.

So guys do not copy the Murray’s thoughts but learn from him that it take key-ideas to win.

Why is self-control so difficult during the competition?

The self-control of the sports performance is a very difficult task even for the expert athletes.

But who can be defined as an expert? Who is able to effectively manage a sequence of increasing challenges in specific situations.

Self-control is based on the development of the  self-regulation skills in three distinct areas:

  • behavioral self-regulation – the athletes act observing them-selves and strategically adjust their behaviors. It happens when an athlete misses a shot and decide what to do to correctl it in the next action,
  • environmental self-regulation – the athletes adapt them-selves to environmental conditions or outcomes. In shooting sports the athlete can change the lens color  as a function of the light conditions or may take more time before the execution.
  • covert self-regulation – the athletea are aware of their cognitive and emotional processes and decide whether to persevere in those conditions or changing them. During the performance or training thoughts and emotions prepare the athlete to speak at his/her best or they can be a source of problems to solve.

The expert athlete must be accurate and consistent in performing these activities of self-regulation by monitoring in the same time the results of the performances, so as to be aware of what are the best conditions to compete effectively and increase self-confidence.
The mental coaching is the means by which to train these skills.

Walk and find calmness

Today, September 1 marks somehow the end of summer and the beginning of a new period of activity. For many of us want to say to continue to have a sedentary lifestyle  spent in car or public transport and activities where you do not spend a bit of physical energy. We all know  that it’s unhealthy but most of us (in Italy) continue to live in this way by referring to an hypothetical tomorrow all forms of active life because we do not have the time today. At least in Italy there are not solutions shortly to this lifestyle: bike lanes are almost non-existent as well as spaces where walking sure not to be invested, many people take the car for less than one kilometer and young people have no incentive to walking, in many cities public transport  are infrequent and not on time and their use is not promoted by municipalities, at school  we have 2 hours per week of physical activity from elementary to high school,  without to mention the eating habits that lead to having more and more children overweight as 30% of adults. Nevertheless, we cannot just complain because it’s our life and we will not have a second to live. So we have to use our motivation and begin to live in a better way.

To do this we can start by two simple and inexpensive activities: walking 30 minutes every day and spend 15 minutes a day to develop thoughts pleasant and positive, (the one that goes by the saying – indulge in thoughts of peace and calmness -). Before to say that is good for nothing  and come back to our role as a victim of the times, let a little time to try, we will always be able to return to the old habits.

Thoughts are always a big problem

The worst problems for an athlete are coming from his/her thoughts. Images and words often invade the mind at inopportune moments.  Thoughts can only have the duration of one moment but in many sports like shoothing, track&field, gymnastics , diving, swimming  can destroy the performance. When an athlete is in the optimal zone, the mind is empty and he is devoted to do those actions for which he has been trained so much, without even thinking of the result. To achieve this goal she must have trained mentally for a long time .
