What do you want to become good?

Often we, as psychologists, are confronted with excellence, in sport as in other professionale fields, and the question I ask myself is how much excellent I am in my performance. Years ago the first to ask me this question was John Salmela, a great friend and colleague. In fact, he used to ask his students: “How much do you want to become good? Want to be mostly good psychologist in your neighborhood? Or in your town or even more?” It might seem like a rhetorical question, but concerns our expectations and our goals.
What I want to become good has to do with:
• the skills I want to acquire
• the time I want to devote to this occupation
•  the network I want to create to achieve my goals
• my persistence in the face of difficulties
• the belief of being able to deal with any situations
• understanding of what it wants the sports world to which I turn
• the time dedicated to continuous improvement, no matter how obtained until then
If we are not able to provide constructive answers to these questions, we could not understand the excellence and even less help ourselves to reach it in our work.
