10 questions for the new year at coaches and athletes

Start the year with an assessment of how we coach if we are coaches and how we learn if we are athletes. Reflecting on these 10 points allows you to set your next athlete/team improvement goals.

How often I teach or learn as a coach or athlete that:

  1. The athletes totally controls the process of their actions (technical/tactical, timing, accuracy and quickness) and much less the outcome.
  2. “Before determines after” (e.g.: quality of warm-up determines physical and mental readiness to train and compete).
  3. Mistakes are an intrinsic part of training and improvement occurs through immediate reaction to this situation.
  4. You must maintain high intensity and concentration during training.
  5. You must be mentally “ready to do” and not just “do it.”
  6. You must be aware of your thoughts, emotions and actions.
  7. Training is not a sequence of exercises, but of situations to be resolved in the best way possible.
  8. Coach/athlete/team dialogue is a fundamental aspect of success as a coach and athlete.
  9. Before beginning an exercise, always imagine for a few moments the next task.
  10. Behavioral routines are essential for performing challenging tasks and for dealing with competitive situations.
