Roma with poor confidence in its skills

After the game CSKA-Roma I wondered whether to defend the result of 1-0 as did Rome, staying for two-thirds of the second time in its half field is a sign of realism or it’s a demonstration of a mental limit that prevented the team from continuing to do its usual game. Florenzi seems to favor the latter interpretation of the result:  It’s a great insult to us, but we’re almost deserved because we played  differently in the second half. We were all behind and we did not  the hold ball, we are sorry because conceding goals in 15 ” is very sad.

Also interesting is the interpretation of  Francesco Totti who compared the goal did to his team at the last second to a Tyson’s punch. Continuing with the same metaphor, I would say that it is quite obvious that you can not leave for long time the initiative to Tyson because sooner or later comes the knockout punch .

There is a third explanation, Roma played back because the team was not confident about of its physical condition … but it would be very strange not to have this certainty, because adequate physical condition is the basis of the mental confidence to be competitive and successful throughout all the match.

In summary, I believe that Roma should work hard to change this defensive mentality and this lack of belief in itself. First, his coach should avoid such mistakes since he is the boss and he has to transmit to the team the conviction of being able to fight in the same way until the final whistle.

The business of the soccer school

Today report of the newspapers laRepubblica about the Italian soccer schools.

“At the start, the ambition of all is the bluet-shirt and this feeds the business of the soccer schools: 7,189 in Italy, impressive number when compared to middle school (8 thousand) or elementary (16 thousand).  The annual fees range from € 300 to 900  and provide revenues to the schools with many zeros. Sport clubs often small, that contribute to the children training and growth. Antonio Piccolo, instructor of the school football Arci Scampia ( three fields with synthetic grass, 500 subscribers), explains: ” the boys less good do not have to burn the dreams, but neither raise false illusions. We must teach them that in life there is more: the study, work, be better citizens . They have as reference the television or the millions of Balotelli. They play because they want to have success, they re always less those who do it for fun. Instead, the football is beautiful because you share goals with a group of friends, because it gives emotions even in Excellence and Promotion championships, Sundays with friends. It is legitimate to dream, but the boys need to be protected. First of all, from mothers and fathers, who often instead seek redemption of their lives through the children. Then from some people that roam the fields : Fifa agents are all here, all approaching the parents, all are talent scouts. In a neighborhood like ours, we have an extra duty. ”

The academies are divided into three levels of quality. 73% are basic centers. To get the status of a football school “recognized” need qualified coaches, a doctor, adequate facilities (24% of the total). Higher still are the football schools “specialized” (232,  3% ) have agreements with school institutions and a psychologist who meets parents, coaches and managers. Says professor Alberto Cei , sports psychologist: ” The biggest challenge for the clubs is to manage the parents. As long as the children 8-9 years they are quiet. Then, there is growing anxiety to have in house the new Totti and even the grandparents begin to complain.  They protest if their boys is playing in a mixed team, with the girls, they think ‘why to me?” Meetings with the psychologist are useful to build a positive atmosphere, to raise the quality of teaching .”

When to withdraw from a top sport career

The career of the athletes is lengthening more and more, especially that of most who continue their winning streak. From Roger Federer to Valentina Vezzali or Francesco Totti are many  the sport stars who find themselves in this situation. So what it’s the basis to take the decision to continue rather than to give up the sport. Putting aside any physical problems that may prevent or limit the continuation of the career, the decisive element to be taken into consideration is the motivation and dedication that must continue to be strong and intense.

  • Motivation means that they will reach the goals set  through their commitment.
  • Dedication is referred to the intensity with which the purpose is pursued and results in the commitment with which they are working on a daily basis.

When the athletes show these two psychological dimensions they know that it’s not yet time to withdraw and their coaches have a  sure parameter  to measure the will of their athletes, instead of relying only on the chronological age or years of career variables that can stimulate the prejudices and stereotypes of the coaches.

Totti and Pirlo: the last Italian footbal champions

Francesco Totti and Andrea Pirlo are a bit as the last of the Mohicans, at the end of their career it can be said that they were the last champions that Italian football has produced. We have always had great champions like Mazzola, Rivera, Bulgarelli, Baggio, Mancini, Del Piero, Vialli, Zola to name just a few, but now it’s finished. Who do we thank for this state of affairs, I would say those who are at the center of football and then coaches and physical trainers. My idea of how this happened is simple. Arrigo Sacchi has revolutionized football by introducing the total football, however, this type of play was interpreted by the strong champions who played in Milan, as well as the first was introduced by the Dutch national team where there were some of the strongest players of the world. When the system has spread it became barbaric and the guys spent much time learning tactics and preparing them physically instead learn technique. In doing so, it is almost impossible to emerge a young talent, because Rivera and Maradona would have been discarded as too physical weak or might not have ever played football in a club because they would be bored.

Then it would be the time that the coaches put aside their tactical narcissism  and physical trainers their ideas more useful for american football players and together devote much more time to teach the football technique, which is to take, pass and shoot the ball.
