Albert Bandura has died

Albert “Al” Bandura, the David Starr Jordan Professor of Social Science in Psychology, Emeritus, in the School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S), whose theory of social learning revealed the importance of observing and modeling behaviors, died peacefully in his sleep in his Stanford home on July 26. He was 95.

Bandura is internationally recognized as one of the world’s most influential social psychologists for his groundbreaking research on the importance of learning by observing others. In a 2002 issue of the General Review of Psychology, Bandura was ranked the fourth “most eminent psychologist of the 20th century” behind B. F. Skinner, Jean Piaget and Sigmund Freud.

He is best known for developing social cognitive theory (also known as social learning theory); the concept of self-efficacy – the idea that a person’s belief in their ability to succeed can shape how they think, act and feel; and his Bobo Doll experiments.

“Al Bandura was a giant in the field, whose influence spanned clinical, cognitive, affective and developmental psychology,” said Stanford psychologist Laura Carstensen, the Fairleigh S. Dickinson, Jr. Professor in Public Policy in H&S and the director of the Stanford Center on Longevity.

Self-Efficacy and observation

In this period many interventions with the coaches that I am doing concern the use of observation as a system to improve their teaching during the sessions and their relationships with the athletes.
Albert Bandura’s model is an approach that can allow to apply one of the most widespread theories in psychology and that refers to the belief of a person to be able to successfully face a certain competition situation or even to obtain a specific improvement in a technical skill.
The theory of self-efficacy is based on four fundamental ideas to which the coach can refer to to promote the athlete’s improvement.

Past experiences - It has been shown that an indispensable source of self-efficacy lies in relying on past experiences of success in relation to a task.On this basis, the coach should therefore always link what needs to be done at that time (speaking of course of challenging and significant tasks) by linking this his communication to what has happened before, so as to always connect the past with the present.
Vicarious experiences - We refer to the concept of modeling, observing companions who follow a certain task and also their fatigue is an excellent stimulus to increase the belief in success. It is not difficult in any sport to build such situations in rotation among the athletes.
Social support - we know the importance of supporting commitment and supporting people after a mistake. We always put as first goal the development of the person and then the technical acquisition or the sport result. It is important that the coach explains “why” and not just “how to do”, learning and performance will improve because the athlete will feel that he or she is interested in the development of his or her psychological autonomy.
Physiological and emotional condition - Just remember that the warm-up is the type of activity allowing to achieve a physical and psychological condition of readiness, putting the individual in the condition of being ready. This applies not only to the beginning of the training effectively but also to prepare for the most significant exercises of each training session.

Juve and Roma: same problem in different events?

Few days ago, in the match between Juventus and Roma , the first one has crushed the other for determination and will to win. In the next match against Genoa, Roma went immediately trailing by two goals, also for the lack of determination of its players. Then its captain, francesco Totti scored a goal and the attitude on the field has changed and Roma won 4-2.

Yesterday in the Champions League, Juventus have approached the Danish team, obviously lower level, but instead, they score a goal and only in the second time of the match Juventus managed to equalize.

Juve in the Italian champioship makes the lion’s share but in Europe it has not been able to show the same attitude. Rome needs to take two slaps before starting to play as well as it knows. For both it is a matter of conviction, Juve does not show it abroad  and Roma does not show it in the first part of the game. This is their task for the immediate future: playing with conviction regardless of the type of competition (Italian championship  or  Champions League) or the period of the game (ebeginning or later periods).
