Martina Grimaldi won the gold at 25km of the swimming world championship

Martina Grimaldi won the gold medal at 25 km of the  swimming world championship. with an unbelievable final sprint. Her time has been of 5h07’19″8 at one-tenth from the second, Germany’s Angela Maurer and 7 tenths from the third, U.S. Eva Fabian.

Martina Grimaldi commented: “I got discouraged after the beginning of  world championship. Took me head and heart. Today at the end I was just saying that I had to resist and try to bring something home … when I saw that we were three, I tried to run the final rush. I dedicate this gold to my parents and to those who stood by me these days. ”

 

The new calmness of Federica Pellegrini

The story of Federica Pellegrini  shows that even one of the most talented and successful athlete,  needs at some point in her career a period of recovery after years of very intense work. She has not taken a year off but she has reduced the competitive commitments, the training hours and she is dedicated to a different swimming specialty. The example of Federica Pellegrini is true for everyone, not just for the athletes to the Olympic level. It teaches us that recovery is part of the sport career that you can not put stress on for years without having a recovery period. You can not always push hard, because in the long run this attitude leads to drop out and loss of serenity. You have to desire to train and to sacrifice yourself and to feel joy in being tired, when it becomes a burden you have to stop or reduce the commitment. This is also important for amateur athletes, who must not win anything but too often they consume themselves without ever taking a moment’s rest. We must never forget that the recovery is part of the workout.

To win the cancer

This is the story of Amanda Mercer, 44 yeras old, that four months after being operated on for breast cancer, along with other teammates, set a new record of team swimming the English Channel. After the surgery the doctors had not only recommended Amanda to start this challenge, but she was told that she could never do it, much less training because the chemotherapy would make her very sick and weakened. Her instinctive response to this reply was: “They do not know me.” Nine days after the first chemo went to swim and made just 1 km, very slowly but it felt good. After 12 days, began to swim faster and again he was convinced that he would make it. The second and third chemo were terribles. She could no longer keep up with her teammates, she was tired, but the heart told her that shewould have done anyway. Fourteen days after the last chemo Amanda was on the boat ready to dive into the cold water of the English Channel for her first round of an hour of swimming. After the first two rounds she began to feel tired with a strong nausea, if she had not dive into the sea the team would be disqualified. She dived anyway and after a few minutes was overcome by fatigue and negative thoughts. She began to think of a friend who had an incurable disease and that what she was feeling was nothing compared to the situation that Bob lived. The body began to react positively, thought also to her husband who was waiting on the beach in Dover and concentrated to count the strokes. The cancer did not stop her, it did her just go slower.

When the coach is not a leader

The stories of  Schwazer and Italian swimming both still today in the newspapers show how difficult it is now the coach work even in individual sports. The role of  leader of the pack is not a prerogative of our fellow four-legged, it must also be good for us. When the coach does not play this role and the athletes get out of hand every thing can happen and it is what really happened.   We should learn from Cerioni, the Italian coach of the girls gold foil that he has managed to keep the band together on goal, regardless of the personal relationships between the athletes or listen to the Jamaican sprinters who though opponents have always been among their friendliness and respect. I repeat, a consultant psychologist could help significantly these coaches and many others for whom there is no mention in the newspapers but who commit the same mistakes.

How Federica Pellegrini lives the last days before the Games

Federica Pellegrini explains how she spends the days before the Olympics. “From here to the race first of  all there is the serenity, I’ll be in my bubble, concentrated and isolated inside the coach and family, bring everyone out of anxiety.” Well done Federica.

La tenacia: un’abilità per superare le crisi

La tenacia è ovviamente utile a ogni persona e non solo agli atleti. Prendendo ad esempio di attività il nuoto si può dire che serve a mantenere l’attenzione sul presente. In gara significa essere focalizzati sul piano di gara e nel mantenere la condizione emotiva necessaria a eseguirlo. In allenamento permette di perseguire gli obiettivi di una singola seduta al fine di raggiungerli o di avvicinarsi il più possibile. Dopo una gara consente di fare ciò che serve per imparare il massimo dall’esperienza agonistica appena svolta e prepararsi per quella successiva.

Attacchi panico in mare

Intervista in TV a un allenatore di nuoto della nazionale sull’attacco di panico della Consiglio. Il giornalista chiede cosa bisogna fare e il tecnico risponde: “ritornare in acqua il prima possibile.” Complimenti per la risposta che avrebbe saputo dare anche mia nonna ma che purtroppo è quella sbagliata. Poichè la questione non è l’acqua ma risolvere questo problema solo psicologico insegnando all’atleta a ritrovare quella fiducia che in quei momenti non ha avuto. Gli attacchi di panico sono tipici in atleti di alto livello e nascono da un intreccio tra perfezionismo,  aspettative di risultati assoluti e stress da competizione. Che fare? Accettazione di queste emozioni, rilassamento e visualizzazioni di eventi positivi sono alla base di questo processo di miglioramento. Il dialogo continuo con se stessi è la costante che deve accompagnare questo processo. Quindi ricapitolando, per il medico “è solo un fatto psicologico” e per il tecnico “basta entrare in acqua”.
