Psychological Support Brings Olympic Success for Korean Athletes

The Republic of Korea has enjoyed its best Olympic Games results since 1988, finishing 5th in the medal table in London, with a total of 28 medals including 13 golds. Two of its most successful teams, archery and shooting, both benefited from psychological support programmes.

Support for the Korean archery team was provided by Young Sook Kim, from the Korea Institute of Sport Science, during an 11-month period preceding the Games. Support was provided in 1-2 hr sessions, 2-3 times per week, and included psychological profiling and psychological skills training that was progressively individualiszd in training and tailored towards the Olympic competition. The archery team won 3 gold medals and 1 bronze medal in London.

The Korean shooting team was even more successful in London, winning 3 golds and 2 silvers. Support was provided in the two years preceding the Olympic Games by ByungHyun Kim, also from the Korea Institute of Sport Science, an applied practitioner of 20 years’ experience. Support emphasized anxiety control, concentration, confidence, and coping with the high expectations of the Korean public.

Mental Preparation of Iranian Athletes at London 2012

Psychological support to Iranian athletes for the Olympics and other major games is planned and supervised by the Center for Counseling and Mental Skills Training, located at the National Olympic Academy in Tehran.  For the 2012 Olympic Games, personnel were Mohammad Khabiri, Yadollah Farhadi, Khosro Hamzeh, and Ali Reza Farsi, who were appointed almost a year ahead of the Games. They met with all national federations whose athletes had qualified for the Games to assess their needs. The federations of Boxing, Taekwondo, Weightlifting, Archery and Canoeing each had a sport psychologist appointed to the team, who organized workshops, individual and group counseling, and profiling. No psychologist accompanied the Iranian delegation to the Games.

T
he Iranian Paralympic team returned home with several medals and lots of memories. A group of certified sport psychologists, led by Mohammad Vaez Mousavi , supported the paralympians in the preparation for the Games. In training camps there was a daily program to assess and develop mental skills. Clinical issues were also addressed with the help of clinical sport psychologists. Dr. Mousavi accompanied athletes during events in London. According to medalists who were interviewed after the games, proper psychological preparations was one of the major reasons for their achievements. Iran ranked 11th among more than 140 countries taking part in the Games.

Olimpic trap was really cruel

The trap competition,  shooting, it was really cruel. The Croatian Cernogoraz won the gold medal but it was entered last in the final with 122 out of 125 target. Giovanni Pellielo, however, with one plate less, 121 out of 125, has been out of the final, finishing in seventh place. Michael Diamond had taken all the 125 plates equaling the world record, in the final five plates was missed and he was ranked only fourth.  Fabbrizi and Cernogoraz  have concluded with the same score the final, so they made a shotoff that lasted 6 plates, the sixth the Italian missed the target and finished in second place. In this sport the difference between the joy of victory and the sadness of defeat has really done nothing. The revenge for those who will be in four years.

99/100 = Jessica Rossi

Jessica Rossi won gold in shooting, olympic trap, with an incredible score of 99 out of 100, the new world  and Olympic record. Rossi has twenty years and she is a true talented Italian athlete. It ‘s the proof that investing in young athletes is an effective investment in and do well in a sport, like shooting, where you can race up to 40 years. She showed that calm and concentration are skills that are not only acquired  later in life but they can already lead to a great success a young athlete.

Wonderful foil athletes beyond rivalry

The wonderful of the the foil are the four Italian fencing athletes, Errigo, Di Francisca, Vezzali and Salvatori. They wanted to continue to show and affirm their value despite individual successes and personality differences. They re an example of how to overcome the individual differences to reach a higher goal, to which without cohesion they could not aspire. Do not just be the three strongest in the world, to win as a team you must really want it for.

Pellegrini flop: it’s time to say

Now we can say that Federica Pellegrini had never done in this period the time would be needed to win. In sports of short duration as the 200m time, the training times are predictive of the value in the race. It’s not like in precision sports where you can lose  for small errors of accuracy or gymnastics where a fall can always be done. Personally I think the coaching staff knew about her condition and the marketing needs have prevented that reality came to light. I say this without any shadow moralist because I know the value of money.

To manage the olimpic final

To know how to manage the Olympic final is the incredible into the incredible. First, because it is an exceptional result to get it, then why should not get mentally exausted. It may seem strange that it could happen but it happens more often than one might imagine. It was probably the case of Arianna Errigo in the fencing final,  for Scozzoli in swimming and Occhiuzzi in saber. The athlete may not be ready for this final test, there has been exhausted for that goal and he/she does not have any more. These athletes would be useful to a sports psychologist who helped them find their mental energy required to fight at their best and to be determined to win. My personal memory goes back to when an athlete before the final Olympic in shooting, which was entered in the top six, told me he had nausea, which had no more energy and did not know what to do. My response was to remind him in a few minutes all he had done in previous years, the sacrifices to achieve that goal and that was the moment to go and do what he knew. He did it and won the silver meda.

- 2 to the start of the Games

There are only 2 days at London 2012, the wait is ending.  Many athletes will begin on July 27, for them these last days are critical moments when the tension grows up and they need to know how to handle. The best athletes have personal strategies, Federica Pellegrini has been recharged and rested at home and now is in the bubble created around her, which excludes anyone who is not a carrier of calm and confidence. Bolt gives interviews where he says that he is ready and he will control the stress  with his exuberant behaviors until few moments before the start. Some Italian athletes have back to home and they will return to London just for the day of official training before the Olympic competition. So many ways to handle this phase  with the goal to find the right mood to be the best in that day.

Alessandro Campagna and the team mind

Alessandro Campagna, class ’63, man-symbol of the Italian waterpolo, arrives in London by coach of the world champion team. “Players need of my voice – tells the coach – between me and them there is a high mental and psychological contact. I would say to empathize, so my presence at poolside is essential: they see me and hear me. Not it leads optimum performance without coaching the mind. “
