The soccer words: umility, confidence and motivation

“We have not fallen into the shoes of the match. Draw useful at least to bring us back down to earth” (Allegri, coach Juventus).

“Before we did fear, we were more confident” (Florenzi, Roma footballer)

“The confidence of Mancini is critical to my teammates and me. Every day he gives me motivation and enthusiasm” (Guarin, Inter footballer).

Humility, confidence and motivation are the key concepts expressed in these sentences. Beyond the players’ technique and talent if in a team are lacking these mental qualities everything else is worth less than nothing.

Confidence and decision are two key factors of a match

In team sports, the technique and tactics must become automatized through training, in this way the players can implement them without thinking in advance how they should have to play, but based on what it’s happening at any given time on the field they know in advance what to do. The intensity and quality of training allow teams to put in place their competences even in difficult conditions, under  stress and fatigue. In addition, the teams that have also top-players obviously have more weapons to prove their worth and prevail over their opponents. There is, however, another factor that may hinder or promote the team play skills. It’s a psychological factor that refers to the mental attitude with which a team takes the field and can thus arise:

  • it’s an attitude convinced of the own abilities and decided to assert them in the field with a combative behavior of the players,
  • it’s an attitude convinced of the own abilities, but for some reason the team believes that this attitude will spontaneously out during the game,
  • it’s an approach not fully convinced of the own abilities and those fears are manifested during the game through game errors.

I am personally convinced of the need to train the players to live the matches with the first attitude of the three, in which the belief is combined with the awareness of having to show this attitude in any moment of the match. Many teams do not always show this attitude and then they make mistakes like those of superficiality made by Juventus players against Galatasaray. Then to play at the highest levels the top players are necessary and the same for the tactical schema, but in the same time it serves to demonstrate that the team  is able to exert a constant pressure on opponents.

To dream is very important for the young athletes

For many athletes the year after the Olympics is a period of transition. Often those who have achieved great successes in the four previous years use this year as a time of recovery, to be ready next year to start a new challenge. For younger athletes, however, can be an important year to prove their value in international competitions in a time when the best are not making pressure. And it is on these that I want to focus, with the question: when does a young athlete (girl or boy) begins to dream that she/he could be part of the Olympic team of her/his country? And then it makes sense to dream?

I found support for this idea in a study conducted some years ago by the U.S. Olympic Committee, it was asked this question to the athletes who have been members of the US Olympic team in the period 1984-1998. These are the results:

  • The athletes began to dream of becoming Olympic athletes in the period in which they obtained their first successes at the local level (between 10, 9 and 18 years).
  • After about 3,5 years they decided to pursue this dream.
  • After about 1,7 years they thought that their dream was realistic at an age between 13,4 and 22,4 years.

The differential of age are due to the fact that gymnastics and swimming are sports earlier specialization compared others such as shooting, rowing and track and field athletes where the athletes reach maturity at an older age.
These findings teach us that boys and girls need to nurture their dreams and that they pass from an initial desire to one in which you decide to commit to make it last that it is considered realistic implementation. Second, another strongest trend to emerge from these data was the short period of time between the decision to become Olympian and the belief that it was possible.

First: react
